The Ageing Population Challenge in Europe: The Activage Association approach

Introduction

Activage Association is dedicated to developing an ecosystem where seniors, families and caregivers, social care operators, technology innovators and producers, health and social care agencies, and public and private institutions can create a network of mutual connections. This network aims to maximize value creation, supporting independent living, active ageing, and well-being for people of all ages across Europe.

The progressive ageing of the population is a significant challenge facing Europe and the world. As life expectancy increases and birth rates decline, the demographic landscape is shifting dramatically. According to the United Nations, the number of people aged 65 years or over is projected to triple by 2050, reaching almost 1.5 billion globally. In Europe, this trend is particularly pronounced, with profound implications for healthcare, social services, and the economy.

Demographic Trends in Europe

Europe is at the forefront of the ageing population trend. As of 2023, approximately 20% of the European Union’s population is aged 65 or older, a figure expected to rise to nearly 30% by 2050. The number of people aged 80 and over is projected to more than double, from 5.9% in 2023 to 14.6% by 2050. This demographic shift is driven by increased life expectancy and declining fertility rates, with the average life expectancy in the EU reaching 81 years.

Implications for Healthcare and Social Services

The ageing population presents significant challenges for healthcare and social services in Europe. As the number of older adults increases, so does the demand for healthcare services, long-term care, and support for chronic conditions. The European Commission estimates that public spending on long-term care could rise from 1.6% of GDP in 2020 to 2.7% by 2050. This increase in demand will strain existing healthcare systems, requiring substantial investment in infrastructure, workforce, and technology to meet the needs of an ageing population.

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the importance of integrated care models that combine health and social services to provide comprehensive support for older adults and their families members.

The approach of Activage Association

Addressing the global challenges posed by an ageing population requires a multifaceted approach involving governments, the tech industry, healthcare providers, pharmaceutical companies, patient organizations, NGOs, and other stakeholders. At Activage Association, we aim to make a significant impact on both the demand and supply sides of this equation.

On the demand side, we focus on empowering older adults, their families, and caregivers by providing unbiased, trustworthy, and accountable information. This approach enhances their ability to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

On the supply side, we have pioneered the creation of Activage.shop®, a highly specialized and trustworthy online marketplace for products and services that promote active and healthy living among seniors. We invite citizens and service providers to join this platform to collaboratively address the emerging challenges of ageing with health, freedom, and independence.

Our strategy emphasizes the transition of senior care from institutional settings to home-based care, prioritizing early prevention, anticipation, prediction, and rapid intervention in health and social risks. We recently launched Vitana®, a service that monitors seniors’ daily routines at home, empowering them to maintain autonomy while providing peace of mind to their families. Activage.shop® will feature a range of innovative solutions, including remote health monitoring, wellness programs, home safety, and physical and cognitive training, developed by Activage Association and our community of suppliers and contributors.

In addition to our two primary action lines focused on the practical implementation of solutions, we are actively engaged in two supporting activities. First, we continue to invest in research and innovation through our active participation in European projects. The Activage Association team and our members bring extensive experience in innovation related to senior care, assisted living, home healthcare, and enabling technologies, which we are applying to our implementation projects. Second, we have launched a consultancy service to facilitate the transfer of our knowledge assets to stakeholders involved in active and healthy living projects across Europe.

Conclusions

The ageing population in Europe presents both challenges and opportunities. While the demand for healthcare and social services is set to rise, the Silver Economy offers substantial potential for innovation and economic growth. By embracing these opportunities, we can enhance the quality of life for older adults and create a sustainable future for all generations. Addressing the challenges of an ageing population requires cross-sector collaboration and a commitment to developing age-friendly policies and practices. This is the commitment of Activage Association, as we strive to lead the way in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for seniors.
